The Saturn family of American rockets was developed by a team of former German rocket engineers and scientists led by Wernher von Braun to launch heavy payloads to Earth orbit and beyond. The Saturn family used liquid hydrogen as fuel in the upper stages .

Oct 26, 2021 · The Saturn SA-1 flight was the first of 32 successful Saturn rocket launches —10 Saturn Is, 9 Saturn IBs, and 13 Saturn Vs — between 1961 and 1973. To this day, the Saturn remains the only family of rockets to achieve a 100 percent success rate.

Flown from 1967 to 1973, it was used for nine crewed flights to the Moon, and to launch Skylab, the first American space station. As of 2024, the Saturn V remains the only launch vehicle to have carried humans beyond low Earth orbit (LEO).

On Nov. 9, 1967, with the Space Age barely 10 years old, NASA took one giant leap forward: the first flight of the Saturn V Moon rocket. For the mission known as Apollo 4, the 363-foot tall Saturn V had rolled out to Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida on Aug. 26, 1967.
