Elon Musk has promised more affordable space travel with the launch of his company’s reusable Falcon 9. But how exactly does this rocket work?

Falcon 9 is equipped with four hypersonic grid fins positioned at the base of the interstage. They orient the rocket during reentry by moving the center of pressure. The second stage, powered by a single Merlin Vacuum Engine, delivers Falcon 9’s payload to the desired orbit.

Falcon 9 is a partially reuseable medium lift launch vehicle that can carry cargo and crew into Earth orbit. The rocket has two stages. The first (booster) stage burns for approximately 2.5 minutes before separating from the second stage and returning to land.

SpaceX tests its engines, vehicle structures, and systems at a 4,000-acre state-of-the-art rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas. Outfitted with 16 specialized test stands, the facility validates for flight every Merlin engine that powers the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, and every Draco thruster that controls the Dragon spacecraft.
