A federal judge on Friday ordered the immediate release of Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish Ph.D. student at Tufts University who had been held for six weeks in an immigration detention center, ruling that her arrest and continued confinement were unlawful and raised serious constitutional concerns.

Rümeysa Öztürk, a PhD student at Tufts, has been held for about six weeks in Louisiana. She says conditions there significantly worsened her asthma, and that the government violated her constitutional rights.

Cheers erupted outside of Vermont federal court after a judge ruled that Tufts University grad student Rumeysa Ozturk must be released from immigration custody on bail.
