Police said they tried to help him get to his family's home, but when the man opened the front gate, a large German Sheperd escaped the front yard and attacked the officer. Police said the dog tried to bite the officer on the leg but wound up biting his pants. It let go and bit the officer in his wrist/hand area.

A West Sacramento officer shot and killed an attacking dog on Tuesday night as he was assisting someone to their home, the police department said.
