Glen Lake Camp & Retreat Center is among many summer camps taking a hard look at their emergency preparedness following deadly flash flooding in the Texas Hill Country. The Christian camp for kids in Somervell County, operated by the United Methodist Church since 1939, began reassessing its safety procedures after the recent tragedy.

Five people died in Central Texas floods in October, and then the rain kept coming for the next two months. Catastrophic flooding devastated the Hill Country, and statewide at least 180 Texans died because of the countless overflowing rivers and creeks.

For many, Friday’s flood brought back memories of an eerily similar tragedy, when the Guadalupe River swelled in 1987, killing 10 North Texas teenagers. Those victims, along with more than 33 others who were injured, were trying to escape a Hill Country summer camp when a wall of water washed over them.
