A Norfolk Southern train derailed and leaked chemicals on Tuesday night in northern Ohio, not far from the Cleveland area.

One tank car of ethanol was among those reported to be leaking after a derailment of a Norfolk Southern train Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2025) in Attica, Ohio. The derailment occurred about 8:19 p.m., according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Norfolk Southern train derailed late Tuesday in northwest Ohio, spilling corn syrup and ethanol, officials said. Officials said 20 cars derailed and that the two substances spilled from the cars do not pose a health risk. The train derailed about 8:30 p.m. along U.S. Route 224 in Attica, about 80 miles southeast of Cleveland.

Two of the derailed cars were leaking fluid, according to Stevens. One has been identified as corn syrup and the other as ethanol. The sheriff’s office has a sniffer drone looking over the scene “to double and triple verify,
