In 2022 the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute reported a new species of nudibranch crawling on the ocean floor near the Gulf of California at a depth of more than 7,700 feet.
Bathydevius caudactylus, as this nudibranch is now called, lives 1,000–4,000 meters (3,300–13,100 feet) deep in the ocean’s bathypelagic or midnight zone.
