The truck driver who crashed into a van off Interstate 5 in May 2023, killing seven farmworkers, was sentenced to 48 years in prison on Tuesday.
A "suspicious substance" discovered Tuesday at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras caused a staff member to be briefly hospitalized, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.
Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of six years and three months in prison. Smith was also found guilty of three counts of third-degree assault and one count of reckless driving.
