Syrian authorities have accused Druze militias of obstructing vital humanitarian aid from reaching the southern province of Sweida, deepening the crisis in a region already grappling with deadly sectarian violence and political instability.

The first humanitarian convoy entered the Druze-majority city of Sweida in southern Syria on Sunday, after a week of deadly clashes. A fragile ceasefire appeared to be holding after Druze fighters reasserted control of their heartland of Sweida city and government troops were sent to the province.

A week after deadly clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters in the southern Syrian city of Sweida, Syrian Red Crescent convoys drove on Sunday along the Damascus-Daraa highway to provide humanitarian assistance to citizens stranded in villages under attack.

“The humanitarian situation in Sweida is critical. People are running out of everything. Hospitals are increasingly struggling to treat the wounded and the sick, and families are unable to bury their loved ones in dignity,” said Stephan Sakalian, the head of ICRC’s delegation in Syria.
