Strong winds on Monday drove an out-of-control wildfire through a remote area of eastern California, prompting evacuations for hundreds of homes. The Silver Fire
A vegetation fire erupted in central California over the weekend, quickly spreading to 1,000 acres and prompting evacuations in multiple counties.
The Silver fire in Inyo and Mono counties continued to burn Monday morning, scorching 1,250 acres and spurring evacuations.
The wildfire — which some agencies called the Laws Fire — was reported Sunday afternoon near the highway bridge over the Owens River.
The blaze, which is being called the Silver Fire, was reported at around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, just north of Bishop.
Efforts to battle the 1,250-acre fire in eastern California were complicated by strong winds, which were expected to continue through Monday.
Evacuations were ordered for about 800 homes near the tiny communities of Laws, Chalfant and White Mountain Estates due to the extreme blaze.
According to Cal Fire, the Silver Fire started just after 2 p.m. Sunday near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, northeast of Bishop. Cal Fire’s San Bernardino Unit, which is leading the response, said fire activity intensified overnight due to gusty winds and steep terrain just north of Eastern Sierra Regional Airport.
