Explore how OpenAI’s image generator empowers creators with high-quality visuals, customization, and applications across industries.
Previously, users had to visit a separate tool like DALL-E to generate images, but now, image creation will be seamlessly integrated into ChatGPT. This update is powered by OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4o, which is designed to handle both text and images in a highly advanced way.
The arrival of OpenAI's DALL-E 2 in the spring of 2022 marked a turning point in AI, when text-to-image generation suddenly became accessible to a select group of users, creating a community of digital explorers who experienced wonder and controversy as the technology automated the act of visual creation.
OpenAI is introducing image generation directly within ChatGPT. Powered by its flagship multimodal model, GPT-4o, the chatbot can now create visuals straight from the chat interface. The feature will initially be available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and free users. Enterprise and Education tier users will get access soon.
If needed, you can attach specific files for specific chats inside projects using the paperclip icon—and you can access other tools (such as the image generator) by clicking the toolbox icon underneath the text prompt box. This gives you access to the ChatGPT Canvas interface, which is more similar to Google Docs than Google Chat.
As part of today’s update, OpenAI is switching ChatGPT’s image generation tool from DALL-E to GPT-4o. The latter algorithm is a multimodal large language model that launched last April. OpenAI says that the upgrade will significantly enhance ChatGPT’s graphic design skills.
When DALL-E first launched, it lived on its standalone website; since then, it has moved to ChatGPT. The move came with many benefits, including being able to ask the AI chatbot for an image you want in the same interface where you're already chatting about something else, thereby eliminating the need for constant context switching.
