Each year, the friendly competition between local first responders helps curb critical blood shortages during the summer months.

Vitalant, a nonprofit blood provider for hospitals nationwide, said they are facing an alarming blood shortage.

Officials said donation rates often dip during the summer months, particularly when high school students — a major donor base — are out on break.

Blood donors who give the gift of blood starting July 15 will receive a movie reward courtesy of the American Red Cross.
