APEX, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s first standalone children’s hospital will be built in a bedroom community near the state capital, the project’s health systems announced Thursday, creating a campus estimated to bring 8,000 jobs to the area.

The hospital campus is the latest addition to Veridia, the more than 1000-acre development off of NC-55 and NC-540 that will also include thousands of homes, new retail, dining and office space and a new Wake Tech Community College campus. In downtown Apex, local business owners are expecting a major impact from the development.

"Unfortunately, Cigna is not willing to engage in meaningful discussion or commit to patient care that UNC Health requires," according to a statement from UNC Health. UNC Health patients covered by Cigna can continue using the same doctors, clinics and hospitals, but they should be aware of the possible change coming at the end of this year.

With the end of a three-year agreement approaching at the end of November, UNC Health issued a statement Tuesday warning that coverage could be lost for Cigna members come December 1st.
