At a “No Kings Day” rally in Philadelphia this weekend, out American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten explained why the right constantly attacks teachers. “Paving those opportunities makes us a target,” she said. “Their attacks on public education are relentless.”

That’s part of why George Atkinson, a former high school government teacher, felt compelled to join a protest in downtown Houston on Saturday. The 89-year-old affixed a sign to his walker that read, “The clothes have no emperor! He’s all hat and no cattle!”

Facing threats to the Constitution and democracy, Americans across the country prepare for nationwide mass protests on June 14.

Protests are planned in 1,800 cities across all 50 states — except for Washington D.C., out of respect for Flag Day.
