It has been more than three years since Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac, as part of its move away from Intel processors.

If the Mac Studio was to get an M2 upgrade, there would be little reason to buy an M2 Pro Mac mini. Apple is expected to announce the Mac Pro this year, either at WWDC or in the fall.

But Apple silicon changes things—if you buy a base model $1,999 Mac Studio and a base model $1,599 Studio Display, for example, you’ll pay $1,400 less than the price of the original iMac Pro.

But according to Apple’s environmental reports, the combination of a Mac Studio and Studio Display produces nearly 50 percent fewer carbon emissions over its lifetime than the iMac Pro.

Close to four years after the iMac Pro was discontinued, we’re still left wondering what — if anything — Apple plans for its plus-sized all-in-one computer.

The M2 Ultra Mac Studio scored an average of 2,054 on single-core and 28,813 on multi-core in Geekbench 5; compare that to the 1790 and 12,851 on our M1 Max Mac Studio tests last year.

Had the Mac Studio come out alongside the new MacBook Pros, I most likely would have opted to go for that instead. The M1 Pro 14-inch cost about $2,500 (with a 1TB storage upgrade).
