After watching the scene in “The Substance” where Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, repeatedly applies and wipes off lipstick in front of a mirror — a chilling metaphor for identity, erasure and self-loathing — I couldn’t have imagined that critics and awards voters would embrace it.

In an evening of surprises at the Golden Globes, perhaps the most satisfying win of the night came when Demi Moore took home the Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical award for The Substance. It was a rarity in Hollywood awards season: a body horror satire with a 62-year-old female lead that spits in the face of the entertainment industry’s sexism and splatters enough blood and guts at the screen to make even David Cronenberg nauseous.

"The Brutalist" and "Emilia Pérez" triumphed, "Shōgun" and "Hacks" had big nights, and Nikki Glaser reminded viewers what it's like to have a host who's actually funny in the most memorable Golden Globes ceremony since the awards show nearly atomized a few years ago.
