United Airlines said a plane landed safely at Reagan National Airport after a witness said he saw a kite reach the plane between its fuselage and engine.
The United flight landed with no issues, the airline said. Police said they briefly confiscated a kite from Gravelly Point, where flying kites is prohibited because of low-flying aircraft.
The agency’s acting director told senators of the new policy after it was revealed that tracking technology had been disabled before a deadly midair collision in January.
Air traffic controllers “issued corrective instructions to both aircraft,” according to the FAA. The incident comes just two months after a midair collision above the same airport killed 67 people.
The Delta aircraft received an “onboard alert” that another aircraft was nearby, and air traffic controllers issued corrective instructions to both aircraft, according to the FAA.
