The next lunar eclipse is expected to be seen in the UK on September 7, 2025. The most recent partial solar eclipse visible from the UK happened on June 20, 2021. The UK’s last total solar eclipse occurred on August 11, 1999 and the next total solar eclipse is due to happen on September 23, 2090.

Stargazers around the world caught the first sign of the lunar event, which began at 05:09 GMT, on a livestream run by LA's Griffith Observatory. A lunar eclipse happens when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow on the Moon's surface.

Early risers were able to witness a partial lunar eclipse – or “blood moon” – before dawn on Friday. A “blood moon” is created when the moon moves into Earth’s shadow, gradually darkening before turning red.

A rare blood moon lunar eclipse — which hasn’t happened in the U.S. since 2022 — was visible for skywatchers across most of North and South America, as well as the west side of Africa and Europe, the eastern parts of Australia and Russia and northern Japan.

Spectacular pictures of the moon were published as it was seen across the Americas, where a full lunar eclipse occurred, but in the UK it was only a partial eclipse because the moon had already set below the horizon by the time it was fully covered just before 7am.
