JWST launch delayed to Dec. 24 On Saturday, Dec. 11, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope was secured on top of the Ariane 5 rocket that will launch it to space from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.

The new launch date is “indeed due to the preceding Ariane 5 launch and the serial nature of launch prep — No technical or other issues on the side of the spacecraft,” McCaughrean tells Inverse.

Webb is the largest, most powerful telescope ever launched into space. Under an international collaboration agreement, ESA provided the telescope’s launch service, using the Ariane 5 launch vehicle.

Named after NASA’s second administrator James E. Webb, the telescope was launched on Christmas Day in 2021 from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on the Ariane 5 rocket.

Ariane 5’s retirement means that Europe currently has no heavy-lift rocket available. With few options until it deploys the Ariane 6, Europe has to look elsewhere for launch assistance.
