Speaking on his 32 Thoughts podcast Monday, Friedman explained that the 28-year-old defenseman’s value might be more to the Rangers because of how he has helped bring out the best in K’Andre Miller’s game since they were teamed on the second defense pair in New York.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette paired the two when Miller returned from an upper-body injury on Dec. 28. While they didn’t gel right from the jump, they’ve quickly built chemistry and have arguably become the Rangers’ best two-way defensive pairing.
The defenseman, who was traded to the Rangers in December for Kaapo Kakko, signed a five-year, $20.5 million contract extension on Saturday.
Will Borgen was acquired from Seattle on Dec. 18 for Kaapo Kakko and has been a steady presence in 17 games with the Rangers while averaging 18:35 of ice time.
