On the 02 of April 1865, General Grant ordered a full assault once more. And the Third Battle of Petersburg commenced. The Confederates surrendered the city to the Union on the 3rd of April.

At the Third Battle of Petersburg, just seven days before Lee's surrender, Hill proclaimed that he had no desire to see the end of the Confederacy. He rode to the front lines and was shot dead.
