Maurice Robert Hines Jr. was born in Harlem in New York City on Dec. 13, 1943. Gregory was born Feb. 14, 1946. Their mother, Alma Lola Lawless Hines, became a canny manager of the family act.

Gregory Hines is shown in 2002 in Dallas. Hines, a master tap dancer who transcended the stage with a successful screen career, died of cancer Saturday in Los Angeles.
