Art & Exhibitions Restoration Reveals Famous 18th Century Master’s Hidden Self-Portrait. The mysterious painting features a shadowy figure that looks suspiciously like the artist.

It is done on the ceiling of the Church of Saint-Roch in Paris and was completed in the 18th century. The painting shows the Virgin Mary being called into heaven, surrounded by angels and saints.

The painting, Basket of Wild Strawberries (1761), was sold for €24.3m (with fees)—the highest price paid at auction for an 18th-century French painting—at Artcurial in Paris in March 2022.
