Every Friday, Gillian Burgess leads a group of kids to Escuela Key Elementary in Arlington, Virginia. It’s called a “bike bus,” and Burgess said it helps kids build confidence.

The bikes were donated courtesy of D.C. Bike Ride, the organization behind the annual 20-mile citywide cycling event. The helmets were donated by the Bell brand.
