The resolution authorizes the use of $50,000 from the County Commission’s Contingency Fund to pay for the audit.

The resolution holds no legal weight but sends a message from one elected body to another that they are not in support of measures made. The commission has almost approved a vote of no confidence against Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert in 2022 but instead opted to ask the state to take over the office.

Shelby County commissioners have voted to hire an accountant to audit the Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board’s spending habits.

The resolution approved Monday, Feb. 10, calls for $50,000 in funding for the audit from the County Commission’s contingency fund.

The Board of Commissioners said MSCS's budget comes out to about 2.2 billion annually, entirely funded by taxpayers.

The Memphis-Shelby County Schools system will undergo a forensic audit to see whether taxpayer money may have been misused over the past five years.
