Friends of Tufts University graduate student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was arrested in Somerville last week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, are speaking out.

Ozturk was suddenly arrested by plainclothes federal agents Tuesday in an incident captured by a surveillance camera.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security accused Ozturk, a Turkish national, of "activities in support of Hamas."

Protesters gathered to denounce the detention of Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was apprehended by masked immigration agents last week.

Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University graduate student, was arrested in Massachusetts and sent to the South Louisiana ICE processing center in the swamplands of Evangeline parish in Basile. Sending detainees to the cluster of remote immigration detention centers known as “Detention Alley” in the south is a common practice.
