A brush fire that started on Maui over the weekend has resulted in evacuations and burned hundreds of acres. On June 15, Maui County stated that the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) ordered residents “near Mile Markers 24 and 25 of Kahikinui” to evacuate.

The Kahikinui Homestead residents faced a tense night away from their homes due to a brush fire, highlighting the challenges of limited infrastructure in their rural community.

Firefighters are working to control a wind-whipped brushfire that threatened dozens of homes in Southeast Maui.

The Kahikinui brush fire has spread to 500 acres mauka of the Pi’ilani Highway near mile marker 24 and 25, according to a news release from Maui County. A containment percentage has not yet been determined, the release said, and no injuries or structural damages have been reported.
