Trump had urged a ceasefire before that meeting and threatened "consequences" if Russia didn't agree, only to change his tone significantly afterward, and shift the focus to a "peace agreement."

Trump said an agreement should be struck to end the 42-month-long war which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.

“This was a very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years,” Trump remarked.
