Myanmar’s ruling military has declared a temporary ceasefire in the country’s civil war to facilitate relief efforts following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that has killed more than 3,000 people.

Myanmar’s second largest city, Mandalay was the epicenter of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake which struck last Friday and brought down thousands of buildings.

Hopes are fading for people trapped beneath rubble in Myanmar and Thailand with the passing of a crucial 72-hour rescue window after which survival rates fall sharply.

State television MRTV said the truce would run until April 22 and was aimed at showing compassion for people affected by Friday's quake.
