GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A Grand Rapids police captain defended former officer Christopher Schurr’s fatal shooting of a motorist Patrick Lyoya. Capt. David Siver, who trains officers in use of force, testified for the defense that Schurr’s escalation to deadly force “was reasonable, a reasonable officer could perform the same way in that situation.”

Former Grand Rapids police Officer Christopher Schurr is on trial in the death of Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese immigrant who was shot and killed by the officer three years ago.

The defense attorneys for Christopher Schurr pressed the court for a mistrial based on the testimony from two witnesses brought by the prosecution. The judge quashed the request.
