But one passenger's time on the open seas with Royal Caribbean got significantly worse for their bank account after making a huge faux pas that left them an extra $1,300 (£1,058) out of pocket. The passenger, whose identity remains undisclosed, had bought in to Royal Caribbean's Wi-Fi package.

The plaintiffs, who were identified as John, Jane or Junior Doe, stayed in cabins serviced by Arvin Joseph Mirasol when he was a stateroom attendant on the cruise line’s Symphony of the Seas ship. Mirasol was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in August after pleading guilty to producing child pornography.

Royal Caribbean's The Key offering, for example, comes with internet access along with early boarding, a special lunch and a few other perks. That's not something most passengers need, but sometimes it's priced close to what the internet costs on its own.
