It's been over 100 years since Lou Gehrig's MLB debut, but his legacy and impact are still widely felt. Gehrig, the first-ever MLB player to have his jersey number retired, was first revered for a historic iron-man streak with the Yankees.

The No. 4 patches are designed with the font and colors of the New York Yankees to celebrate Gehrig's 17 seasons with the club, per MLB. Players also had the opportunity to wear red "4-ALS" wristbands during the games.

Monday marked the annual Lou Gehrig Day, which took place on June 1-2 this year and raises awareness about ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) to honor the legacy of Gehrig. The day is observed league-wide,
